Also known as: Colored Filuda Mountain, Pallay Punchu of Apu Tacllo Mountain, Pallay Poncho Mountain or Cóndor Sayana. This tourist destination in Cusco is located 194 kilometers from Cusco city (district of Layo and province of Canas), on a summit located at 4,790 meters above sea level, this mountain is a geological formation dyed in various shades as a result of the complex combination of minerals (red, pink, purple, green, pink, white among others).
According to various investigations carried out on the site, the multicolored tones of the mountain resemble the ponchos used in Peru (ancient and contemporary clothing), hence the name. Also known as Pallay Punchu del Apu Tákllo Apacheta, it is a destination that unlike Vinicunca, has sharper mountains; also the attraction of this place is that we can see one of the largest lagoons in Cusco (Langui), which makes a unique and incredible place.
IMPORTANT DATA:
The best time to visit is in the dry season (April to November), when rainfall is less likely. If you want to visit during the rainy season (December to March), bring a rain poncho. The typical climate of the highest areas of Cusco is cold. Rain, wind and altitude sickness (soroche) can be the biggest obstacles for walkers. Temperatures can drop below zero degrees Celsius at night.
For which public is this tourist attraction ideal?
This tourist circuit is ideal for all lovers of adventure and nature. The recommended age ranges from 12 to 50 years. The walk of 4 or 5 hours (depending on the physical condition of the walker) is not dangerous but requires a moderate-high physical effort. There are sections of steep slopes. However, one of the biggest difficulties is the cold weather and the icy wind; also the altitude of the area can cause altitude sickness.
TOUR ITINERARY:
Early in the morning we pick you up from your hotel in our private vehicle, to start the first part of our two-hour trip to the town of Cusipata, where we will enjoy a nutritious breakfast. Continuing the trip by bus we headed to the district of Layo, where the Pallay Poncho Mountain is located.
In Layo we will make a brief stop to get to know the town and its customs, then our vehicle will ascend for 30 minutes until we reach the base of the mountain. Later we begin a walk of approximately two and a half hours, until we reach the sharp Mountain of Pallay Punchu, whose colors are due to a complex combination of minerals, marine, lacustrine and fluvial sediments.
Over time these sediments were forming layers of different lengths, product of the clash of tectonic plates. These layers of different minerals ended up rising and becoming the mountains that we can see today. Later this mountain was acquiring colors due to the oxidation of its minerals, exerted by the humidity of the area and their erosion.
The weather in the Pallay Punchu mountain is cold and windy in the mornings, at noon it gets drier and sunnier. Throughout the trip we will be able to see the local flora and fauna as well as beautiful landscapes such as the beautiful Langui lagoon, this makes the mountain a very attractive destination. After the visit we descend and enjoy lunch at one of Layo's local restaurants. Finally we will return to Cusco city, arriving at approximately 6 pm.
