TREK TO CHOQUEQUIRAO - 03 DAYS

Choquequirao, the jewel of the Andes, is a Quechua word meaning "Cradle of Gold" (chuqi, gold, and k'iraw, cradle). The name comes from the name of a hill near the archaeological site.

Choquequirao, Choqequirau, Choquekirao, Choquekirau, or Choqekiraw bears the pseudonym "Sister of Machu Picchu," as it is also a striking citadel made mostly of stone (structural and architectural similarity). Like Machu Picchu, Choquequirao has its own story to tell, as it is located between the collision of two very different worlds: the Andean Mountains (branches of the Salcantay snow-capped mountain) and the imposing Peruvian Amazon.

Choquequirao, the archaeological city, was hidden from humankind for almost four centuries, a place that remains mysterious for archaeologists, researchers, the curious, and those in general who choose to visit this territory. What is certain is that this Cradle of Gold has become a favorite among adventure and hiking enthusiasts, due to the challenge of reaching it and trying to discover and understand the ancient secrets it holds in every corner of its citadel. Read more...

DAY 1 (CUSCO - CAPULIYOC - CHIQUISQA - ROSALINA - SANTA ROSA - MARAMPATA): We begin the tour in Cusco, with hotel pickup between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. After everyone is ready, we board our vehicle (approximately 5 hours this day) to the town of Cachora (3,100 meters above sea level, 10,171 feet), where we make a brief stop to make the last purchases for our adventure and have breakfast, if necessary. We then continue by bus, enjoying the views of the snow-capped mountains of Padrayoc (5,482 meters above sea level, 17,986 feet) and Wayna Cachora, until we reach the Capuliyoc Pass (2,970 meters above sea level, 9,744 feet), where we prepare for our hike and meet our team: cooks and muleteers.

In Capuliyoc, we will have a panoramic view of the Apurímac Valley. Then we will officially start our hike and descend, passing through Chiquisqa (2,000 masl. 65.62 ft) until we reach Rosalina beach (1,550 masl. 5,085 ft), where we will have a nutritious lunch and relax; this part of our adventure is mostly downhill and will take us approximately 5 hours of walking. After lunch we will continue our hike; we will cross the famous Apurimac River (talking river), and then climb a slope, passing through Santa Rosa (2,100 masl. 6,890 ft) until we reach Marampata (2,900 masl. 9,514 ft), this part of the hike is considered the most arduous or difficult. In Marampata we will spend our first night in our hostel or camp, enjoying a beautiful starry sky. (Meals: Lunch and Dinner)

DÍA 2 (MARAMPATA - CHOQUEQUIRAO - MARAMPATA - SANTA ROSA - PLAYA ROSALINA - CHIQUISQA): We also start this day early; after a good breakfast, we will walk for two more hours, now the goal is to reach the archaeological site of Choquekirao (3,033 masl. 9,951 feet); after Marampata the road becomes smoother until reaching Choquequiraw; we will also enjoy the magnificent sunrise and the surroundings that the area offers us. We will visit the citadel of Choquequirao for approximately 02 hours, always accompanied by our guide who will explain details of this important Inca city and its importance at the time of its fullness; later we will begin the return to the camp in Marampata; then we will descend to Rosalina Beach but not before stopping and resting in Santa Rosa, after Rosalina we will ascend for 2 more hours until reaching Chiquisqa (after 05 hours of walking), On the route we will enjoy the beauty of the Apurimac canyon; we will spend the last night in Chiquisqa, a place with a beautiful landscape and a pleasant climate. (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)
